About The Authors

Peter GreerPeter Greer is President of HOPE International, a global non-profit organization focused on alleviating both physical and spiritual poverty through microenterprise development in some of the most challenging places around the world, including Afghanistan, DR Congo, and Haiti. Under Peter’s leadership, HOPE has expanded its network from 2 to 14 countries and now serves hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs.

Peter was formerly employed by World Relief, serving as a microfinance advisor in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He later managed Rwanda’s URWEGO Community Banking, which was recognized as the “best microfinance institution in Rwanda” by the United Nations. Peter also worked with CARE Zimbabwe and implemented fraud protection measures in cooperation with Harvard University’s Carr Center of Human Rights.

Peter received his undergraduate education in International Business from Messiah College and completed a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School, with a concentration in Political and Economic Development. In addition to Peter’s nearly 10 years of experience in microfinance, he has been a featured panelist at Harvard’s International Development Conference, has completed executive education at Harvard Business School, and has served as a lecturer at Southern New Hampshire University’s School of Community Economic Development. Peter resides in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with his wife, Laurel, and three children.

Phil SmithPhil Smith, who holds an M.B.A. from the University of Tulsa and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Oklahoma State University, is a philanthropist and private investor. He sits on the boards of publicly-traded Eagle Rock Energy Partners, L.P. and three private companies. He is the coauthor with Eric Thurman of A Billion Bootstraps: Microcredit, Barefoot Banking, and the Business Solution for Ending Poverty.

Phil’s business career was in the oil and gas production business. He has been the CEO and Chairman of the Boards of two publicly traded companies, Tide West Oil Company and Prize Energy Corp. He previously sat on the Boards of Directors of Mesa Inc., Pioneer Natural Resources Company, and HS Resources, Inc.

Phil has spoken to numerous corporate, civic, and religious organizations throughout the United States about microfinance and effective giving strategies. He previously helped direct the investment of millions of dollars for microfinance and other employment-based solutions through the Microcredit Clearinghouse and the Microcredit Solutions Fund. Phil and his wife, Shannon, live in Tulsa, OK. They have four children.
